It was created by a third-party developer using the company's application programming interface. Brightkite already offers native applications to iPhone and Android users.

Dubbed myKite, the BlackBerry app, which was created by developer Chris Hallgren, locates the user through the BlackBerry's built-in GPS. It then finds other Brightkite users nearby in real time. When other people are found, myKite allows users to browse profiles, check status updates, post photos, and write notes on different establishments around town.

Prior to the release of myKite, BlackBerry users had to access the company's mobile site from their phones. According to Hallgren, he used Brightkite's API to develop myKite because he "wanted a native app for the BlackBerry."

myKite is available now for free in the BlackBerry App World. With the service, people can pick a new phone number from Google Voice; when others call it, Google can ring all the actual phones a person uses and handle voice mail.

The old version could let people centralize telephone services, screen their calls, and listen to voice mail over the Web. But the new version offers several significant new features, though. Google now uses its speech-to-text technology to transcribe voice mail, making it possible to search for particular words. Gmail's contacts now is used to instruct Google Voice how to treat various callers. And Google Voice now can send and receive SMS text messages and set up conference calls.

Craig Walker,
head of
Google Voice
(Credit: Stephen Shankland/CNET)

Existing GrandCentral users should get the option to upgrade Thursday, and Google plans to offer it to the public after "a number of weeks," said Craig Walker, product manager of real-time communications and head of Google Voice.

As interesting as the service itself, perhaps, is that Google plans to offer it at no cost. Google is in the midst of a profitability push, trying to wring more money from existing sites, adding advertisements to properties such as Google Maps, Finance, and News that previously lacked them, and canceling many projects such as Google Lively that didn't pass financial muster.

With Google Voice, though, the company is showing more of its earlier, more patient approach.

"Our goal is to be able to offer it to people for free," Walker said in an interview at Google's offices here. Asked what the revenue model is for Google Voice, he offered only an indirect answer: "Let's get a bunch of happy users engaged in Google properties and getting their voice mail through this. Google gets value out of having happy Google users."

Money isn't completely absent from the picture. The company does charge for international calls, and it wouldn't rule out advertising in the future.

GrandCentral has appeared largely dormant from the outside since the Google acquisition, leading some to spotlight it as an example of a promising technology that was squelched by an acquisition. But, Walker said, there was plenty of work going on behind the scenes.

"In addition to innovation, there's been a process of getting migrated and integrating with the Google infrastructure," he said.

One big possible difficulty for people could be the issue of changing phone numbers. People's phone numbers can form a piece of their identity, in particular with home phone numbers held for years and number portability making it possible for people to keep their mobile phone numbers even if they change carriers. Even leaving aside the issue of the hassle of changing phone numbers, sharing your Google Voice number means committing your telephony to Google's services.

Another possible hitch is offering phone numbers that match where people actually live or work. Here, Google hopes to have things under control, though there were no numbers in the 415 area code for my test of the service.

"Our goal is to offer numbers to virtually everyone who wants to sign up. There are a finite number of numbers in the U.S., but we haven't reached anywhere near depletion," Walker said. "We hope to have a pretty good footprint (for area code choices) so that people will have really good choices."

Google Voice, hands on
Overall, I found Google Voice to be potentially useful, with the most compelling option the imperfect but still very useful transcription.

The first promise of Google Voice is to simplify your phone communications. You don't have to worry about which number to hand out to people, and if you're sitting with your cell phone next to you home or work phone, you can choose which to answer. If you have the "screen calls" option enabled, Google Voice will tell ask you if you want to accept the call or send the person to voice mail. (Google Voice asks first-time callers to identify themselves.)

Google Voice's interface now fits in with other Google properties.
(Credit: Google)

In practice, virtualizing your profusion of real-world phone numbers with one that redirects is handy. You can set various preferences--for example, calls from your family members get a custom answering message; calls from your parents don't ring your work number; and calls from your spouse are answered directly when you pick up the phone rather than run through the Google Voice options such as answering the call, sending it to voice mail, or listening in on the voice mail.

But I thought Google Voice's most promising aspect is voice mail transcription.

Today, voice mail is a something of black hole for me. It's a pain to check, and I just tell people to send me an e-mail if they get my voice mail. When I'm on the road or at home, I check my e-mail much more frequently than my voice mail. And e-mail means I have their contact information and a record that they contacted me, all in a handy form that shows up through search.

Transcription brings some of these advantages to voice mail.

Because Google Voice e-mails you the text as soon as it's ready, you can quickly scan it to see if it's important. That's a lot less obtrusive than calling your voice mail system in the middle of a meeting.

Also, reading the text lets you quickly home in on the caller's phone number without having to wait through the whole message. On clever phones such as the Apple iPhone or T-Mobile G1, the phone number is highlighted in the e-mail so you can click it to call back, too.

However, the text-to-speech conversion is imperfect, to say the least--for example, it thought "Steve and Mary" was "Steven Mary." And here's an amusing sample of one transcribed voice mail I left myself: "hey i'm just testing the grand central transcription service to see if it really can do a good tax to speech recognition and that they believe in bed that's little voicemail and a web page because what would not be exciting what time you get in bed a voicemail on the web page."

The Web site uses bolder type for words it's more sure of, so you can make better guesses about

Walker said it takes roughly 30 seconds to translate a 30-second voice mail, which is pretty good turnaround. My timing test of a rambling, 1:45 voice mail took just almost exactly twice that time to show up translated in my inbox, though the voice version was available over the Google Voice Web site almost immediately.

Shallow Gmail integration
You don't need a Gmail account to use Google Voice--any Google account will do--but if you have one, you can customize the system's behavior for existing groups or individuals.

When a message from an unknown number arrives, you can save it with the caller's name through the Google Voice interface, and it will show up in your Gmail contacts, too. A "contacts" tab at Google Voice borrows heavily on the Gmail contacts tab.

However, Google left me wanting deeper integration. Where are Gmail's filters and labels? Google Voice is a big step toward the long-promised utopia of unified communications, but instead it presents me with a new inbox to check.

When I asked Walker whether Google Voice would be unified with Gmail more thoroughly, he wouldn't say, but indicated it's on Google's to-do list.

"There are a host of things we're working on," Walker said. "We want to get the core telephony from GrandCentral to Google Voice, to get that ironed out first."

Even where there is integration, for example with the Gmail contacts page, there are some shortcomings. For example, I have a Gmail mailing list for "family," and I doubt I'm not the only one. My wife is a member of the list, but Google Voice by default opted to use the settings for its "friends" category. Apparently the reason for the issue is that Google Voice is case-sensitive: it created its own "Family" group, with an uppercase F, that has no members in it.

Changing my existing group to "Family" in Gmail merely created two groups with that name, so to work around the issue I copied all the "family" members to "Family." I deleted the original to avoid the messy annoyance of keeping the two identical groups synchronized.

Tussling with carriers?
Another interesting possibility, given Google's Internet expertise and Google Voice's Web-based interface, would be to offer direct calling using VOIP (voice over Internet Protocol). Google Voice already has the potential to shift some of the customer relationship and valuable services from phone service companies to Google, and offering VOIP service would increase that potential.

Walker wouldn't comment that possibility, though he did point out that Google Voice can work with the Gizmo VoIP service. For the regular public switched telephone network, people still have to spend money with AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Vodafone, and others.

"The point was to allow your existing services to work better together," Walker said. "You have to come with your own underlying phones and services for it to work."

Create Free Short URL Redirection Services, Best Redirect URL Forwarding

How to shorten my URL address? Users will now be able to search through videos from more than 30 video hosts, and just as it handles Web queries, the engine will put recently "buzzing" videos on top. This means the results of any given search term will change on an almost daily basis depending on what's trending, or as OneRiot calls it "raging."

OneRiot Vice President Tobias Peggs dropped by CNET's San Francisco office Monday to give me a demo of the service, and it already looks promising. For instance, searching for "shark attack" pulled up some gruesome videos from the past few days. The same search on Google came up with clips from one to two years ago.

With OneRiot's algorithm, of course, it could be the same old videos that show up as the top result, but as Peggs told me, the search tool's value is that these older videos can rise up to the top simply due to their connection with something that's timely or has been revived by social chatter. In my case it was simply seeing a shark attacking a large piece of meat off the side of a fishing boat, a clip that had been vetted as worthy of a watch by OneRiot's social sources.

One thing that's missing from the system but that will be added in a week or two is a way to filter these results. For now it's sorted by buzz factor, but new filters will let you sort by both overall popularity and how fresh the link is. This should make it simpler to figure out what's old and what's not.

Along with the addition of video, OneRiot's front page is getting a bit of a refresh. Instead of just headlines for trending stories, the site will include short summaries of the news to give you a tease of what's behind the link. Peggs says this will continue to develop as the product matures, effectively making the front page of OneRiot something closer to Digg or Technorati. Expect the focus on this to grow if OneRiot continues to go into other search verticals such as images, music, and product search.

OneRiot's new video search organizes results based on what's trending or getting buzz from its social sources.
(Credit: OneRiot/CNET)

Tools for Monitoring a Website’s Popularity

Six Revisions, a blog for Web designers and developers, has a good piece called “15 Tools for Monitoring a Website’s Popularity.” Web metrics give you insight into how many people visit your site each day, where they came from, what they were looking for, whether you succeeded in achieving your goal — a purchase, download, registration or other objective. There’s a lot more to it than that, which is why I’m pointing you to the post.

Jacob Gube, who writes Six Revisions, lists the obvious Web metrics tools such as Yahoo! for U.S. got hacked by a hacker who identified himself as Unu.

The news might have not been of much concern if the company in question had no direct relation to security factors but the fact that Kaspersky Labs itself is known to be a high-profile security solutions and products vendor makes this story even more interesting.

As reported, the hacker got access to the database through a SQL injection attack and may have been able to grab some information about users and their contacts. However, an official statement from Kaspersky Labs assures that no data of any sort has been leaked.

The hacker, who officially publicized the hack on Hackersblog, informs that he only planned to hack the website after he got no response from the Kaspersky Labs team to whom he reported about the vulnerability through email.

It is believed that the vulnerability might have slipped in accidently while the company's official support site was being redesigned which went live almost 10 days ago.

Kaspersky has fully acknowledged the issue and promises to take better security measures to make sure that suck an incident doesn't happen again.

Hands on: Google Earth 5 delightful but imperfect

Google Earth upped the cartographic ante again today with Google Earth 5 for Windows and Mac. As CNET News reported back in April 2008, the latest version incorporates even more data from NASA, the BBC, National Geographic, and other proprietary sources to create one of the most unique map offerings ever, meshing comprehensive real-time data on Earth's surface with information on the oceans, the stars that we see, historical maps, and topographical information on Mars.

Google Earth's new Ocean feature includes a downloadable layer to view global chlorophyll levels.
(Credit: CNET Networks)

Conceptually, the oceanic maps are great. It is beyond cool to be able to see ocean-related points of interest like shipwrecks, and have cross-referenced content like undersea explorations. The interface remains flexible in the new version, too. Hot keys CTRL+ALT+B and CTRL+ALT+T toggle the sidebar and toolbar, respectively, making it simple to maximize screen real estate. Meanwhile, Google's use of scientific content from multiple oceanographic concerns makes this one of the few places that the public can access such an incredible range of facts, figures, and true stories of the sea from one place.

Clicking the busted plug-in icon doesn't take you to the plug-in you need, nor does it tell you what the plug-in is.
(Credit: CNET Networks)

However, it shouldn't surprise many that the execution of the new features leaves much to be desired.

Searching in Google Earth is still atrocious. Even when you have Oceans activated, typing in "Titanic" into the search field will get you nowhere. If you adjust the term to "Titanic shipwreck," your results seem to depend on your most recently searched locations. After looking at San Francisco, searching for "Titanic shipwreck" showed me a list of shops and restaurants that had "Titanic" in the name. After closing and re-starting Google Earth, and searching for "Titanic shipwreck" again, the globe panned over to the correct part of the North Atlantic but did not zoom in.

For Google to fail so hard with its search algorithms is like Ford failing to stay on top of developing car tech.

Even once I found what I was looking for, Google Earth was not always free from failure. There is a feature with which you can click on a white and blue circle icon to learn more about the part of the ocean you're exploring. Sometimes this results in a picture, a bit of text, and links to more content online. Other times I was rewarded with a blue puzzle-piece icon. Clicking on this missing plug-in icon resulted in nothing--no jump to download the plug-in, not even a message telling me what the plug-in is called.

The new historical maps feature lets you compare Las Vegas in 1990...
(Credit: CNET Networks)

These mistakes are more than frustrating; they're the kind of basic problems that an outfit like Google should have nailed down by now. Despite these problems, though, the oceanic maps are pretty cool.

Sticking with Earth for a moment, Google Earth 5 also introduces historical maps. Accessible from the clock icon on the toolbar, they're neat to peruse but aren't useful for in-depth data mining. The time-lapse imagery of recent decades in specific urban areas, like documenting the growth of Las Vegas, is fun but somewhat counter-intuitive to the real-world relationship that Google Earth attempts to perpetuate.

Many of the older black and white maps awkwardly overlay the colorful ground beneath them, too. Having access to the images is better than not at all, but I'd like to see future versions of Google Earth improve on the historic map display and rendering.

...to the Las Vegas of 2009.
(Credit: CNET Networks)

Thanks to information supplied by NASA and other fact-based sources such as A Traveler's Guide to Mars--not to be confused with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy--the Mars map is surprisingly rich with information. From the well-known Olympus Mons to the recent discoveries that indicate the presence of water on the Red Planet, Google Earth's Mars maps are an entertaining, educational delight.

Compiling all this information into one easily navigable place is no small feat, but there is definitely room for improvement. The Mars maps suffer from the same search flaws that plague their earthly siblings, and rendering is often sluggish.

This map of the Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system, hints at the depth of information on Mars that's available.
(Credit: CNET Networks)

You should find that the OpenGL engine is faster than the DirectX version, but if not, you can switch from the second start-up icon loaded in your Start menu. Why you're not able to change this setting from the Options menu is yet another simple fix that would improve the Google Earth experience. Some of the problems that plague Google Earth are long-standing. Let's hope they get addressed before it reaches version 6.0.

• Click here for more stories, and images, on Google Earth 5.0.

Skype 4.0 for Windows delivers truer video, sound

Skype 4.0 became available for free on Tuesday to Windows users (we'll update the link when the file goes live). The free desktop VoIP communicator is a worthy final version that brings some key enhancements with video and audio bandwidth, though it leaves behind some of the extra adornments of version 3.8, the last stable build.

Those who have been following the triple release of betas since the summer won't see more than a few changes. If 4.0 is new to you, however, the developments are more notable.

Skype concentrates on video size, quality, and performance in this version. From version 3.8 to version 4.0, every design change has been made to draw video and IM to the forefront, and for the most part it works. The video window has expanded and calls are easier to start. The classic two-pane interface has consolidated into one, though you can still split them apart if you'd prefer.

Skype's beautifully staged marketing shot shows Skype 4.0's new videotopia.
(Credit: Skype)

As the culmination of the beta series, Skype 4.0 gets a pumped-up video and a completely new audio engine. Compared to other codecs out there, the new audio engine, named Silk, is touted to give Skype super wide-band audio (which operates like broadband), but uses half the bandwidth. Fewer bandwidth demands gives Skypers with dial-up connections (like a lot of people in India and Brazil) a bigger boost, keeping calls from being dropped or mangled beyond recognition.

I'll attest to the great call quality during my interview with Skype's London-based product manager. It was clear and the vocal timbre sounded true. Keep in mind that I dialed in from a newish, memory-loaded Asus computer with full broadband support and a set of top-tier. Quality will still depend on your Internet connection and hardware configuration. Using headphones that support ultra-wide band audio will help.

The video stream was similarly good. Though far from the perfection of TV, I noticed many fewer jumps and blips and sound syncing that was very close to real-time. Problems that have beset Skype's video calls in the past--a frozen or choppy image and packetized audio--were largely absent during test calls. Skype says that's thanks to a new back-end addition that sticks a finger in the air of network conditions. As available bandwidth drops, the bandwidth manager tries to salvage audio first.

What my demo call looked like on a Vista set-up.

In choppy conditions, it helps steady the video, too, by lowering the rate of frames per second and by compressing images more heavily. Your friend on the other end may become blocky and the image delayed, but faces should also break up less than in previous versions.

Other new features include abuse reporting if you receive an invite from an unauthorized Skyper, and a light stub installer that pulls down the rest of the app.

Skype, it seems, has also been pulled into a toolbar partnership. Now when you install, you'll see that an optional toolbar comes bundled with Skype 4.0. The free Browser Highlighter includes the 'Compare on eBay' tool for Firefox and Internet Explorer. Considering that eBay owns Skype, it's not a surprising addition, but one I'll nonetheless pass on every time.

What's missing

There are two skins in version 4.0, the default light gray and blue combo called Skype 'Chrome,' and the classic hue. Skype hinted at more skin support in later versions coming out this year. There aren't plans at the moment to support third-party skins, but customization, I've been assured, will get more attention.

Along these lines are absent customizations that had not been making beta testers happy. If you've been holding your breath for greater IM treatment in this release, or birthday reminders, you might not let it out again until the next launch.

Those of you shouting about the cessation of public chats will be glad to know that Skype 4.0 for Windows will support those you've already got, but it will keep you from adding new ones. Skype told us they're still playing around with ideas of how to become more Web-oriented. It could as easily look like a reshaped version of chats as it could go in a different direction.

That brings us to Skypecasts, another source of some users' lamentations. Skypecasts was pulled last September because it just couldn't grab the hoped-for attention. A similar(-ish) feature will probably be rolled into whatever public chats becomes in future releases.

For now, Skype has retreated to its bread and butter position of providing good, clean voice, video, and text chatting. If worldwide Windows users notice consistently improved audio and video quality, that's not a bad place to be.

Headup puts semantic search in your browser

Headup is the latest company to attempt in-browser semantic search. The Firefox-only add-on that, surprisingly enough, uses Microsoft's Silverlight to do its heavy lifting, will scan whatever page you're on and search a cross section of the Web for related news stories, music, videos, and more.

To personalize the results it finds, you can plug in your contacts and accounts from various social services including Twitter and FriendFeed. This will pepper the results with related tidbits from them when applicable. For example, a quick Headup search for "cheeseburger" showed me that one of my FriendFeed buddies had posted a shot of his late-night meal from the weekend. That's a little creepy.

The search itself takes only a few seconds, since results are streamed as they come in. It's very slick looking, but I found the results a little hard to parse through. Its creators have gone with a strange design that loads up a very small preview of any photos or text, which almost always requires clicking to go to the source site.

The design's not a complete showstopper, but I found myself not wanting to go much further than story headlines and photo previews because doing so would have required loading up an extra page. If the interface could be a little simpler to parse, and resemble something like Google Reader or iTunes with a more approachable source list or results, I think I'd dig it.

Another company doing something similar to this is Vysr, whose RoamAbout add-on puts contextual search right on the side of your browser. It's not as social as Headup, but is slightly less intrusive in its presentation.

Google Bus Will Introduce Internet to New Users in India

Google India has a launched a very unique initiative to educate the offline population in India about the benefits of Internet.

The project is called The Internet Bus and, as the name suggests, it’s a web connected bus that will travel to different cities of India giving people an opportunity to experience the Internet first hand through the various computers installed inside the bus.

Google Internet Bus in India

The Internet Bus website is available at google.co.in/internetbus where you can see the exact itinerary of the bus or check out Picasa for more photos of this Internet bus.

The bus was flagged from Chennai today and will cover most cities in the state of Tamil Nadu over the next six weeks. Everybody knows the sales pages, where they are trying to get there product getting sold by showing how much they've earned with it. Most of the time there product is not, wich you thought it would be.

In another post of mine I showed how you can fake your adsense earnings. This time I will show how you can fake your clickbank earnings.
well it's quite easy, well it's actually too easy. You just have to add a java script code to your navigationbar.
here is the code:

javascript:document.body.contentEditable='true'; document.designMode='on'; void 0

At first it will look like nothing happend, but you can change everything on the site. And ofcourse the earnings.
look at what you can achieve with this. Now you will think twice before you will buy a product from a spammy salespage.

hi

hi i will updated soon
